Just a short drive from Thorndon Farm Holidays, Eggesford Forest offers a peaceful woodland walk with towering conifers and ancient oaks. This well-marked route takes you past the remains of Eggesford House and down to the River Taw, where kingfishers and herons can sometimes be spotted. The forest is particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn golden.

Tarka Trail: Eggesford to Chulmleigh

A picturesque section of the famous Tarka Trail, this short stretch follows the River Taw through lush Devon countryside. Starting from Witheridge, only 2.7 miles from Thorndon, you can explore peaceful rolling farmland, wooded valleys, and remote moorland landscapes. If you choose to stop at Knowstone, the route is approx 8 miles.

Tarka Trail: Eggesford-Portsmouth Arms

This scenic stretch of the Tarka Trail follows an old railway route alongside the River Taw, making for an easy, well-surfaced walk. You’ll pass through peaceful woodland and meadows, with plenty of chances to spot kingfishers, or even otters, and deer. You can either return the same way or catch the train back from Portsmouth Arms station.
